The Amaryllis or belladonna is a bulbous plant. Each bulb of Amaryllis is nearly 5 to 10 cm in diameters. The stripped and dull green leaves are 30 to 50 cm long and 2 to 3 cm broad. These leaves are arranged in twin rows. The leaves live for short span they are born in the autumn and die in the late summer. During the late summer time the Amaryllis bulb produces naked stems each 30 to 60 cm tall. These stems have a cluster comprising either 2 or 12 cone shaped flowers at the top portion. The funnel shaped flowers with six petals are 6 to 10 cm in diameter. An Amaryllis is usually white colored but other colors like pink and purple are also available.

In the beginning of eighteenth century the belladonna flowers were cultivated. Most species of Amaryllis were sold with the name of ‘ready to bloom for the holidays’ even when the flower was named as Amaryllis. Due to this name confusion some flowers of different species are also named as ‘naked ladies’.
